Don’t Wait Until You’re Ready

Don’t Wait Until You’re Ready

When Laurie McGraw sat down with Amanda Rees at HLTH 2025, she asked about the moment Amanda decided to start Bold. What made her think she was ready to build a company now serving 10 million older adults?
Amanda's answer cuts through the biggest myth holding female founders back.

"I think you just have to do it. Your first pitch is gonna be way worse than your twelfth or hundredth pitch. You just gotta rip off the bandaid and you can't expect that you're gonna start from a place of nailing it the first time."
The Princeton-trained engineer knows exactly what stops women from starting. She hears it constantly from aspiring founders: "I'm not sure I wanna start something. Should I go get an extra degree or do this thing before I'm ready?"

Her response is unequivocal: "Don't do it. Don't delay. If you have the itch and you wanna do it, do it. You have to be comfortable that it's almost certainly not gonna go the way you expect it to."

So why start before you're ready? Because preparation is a trap disguised as productivity. Another degree. Another certification. Another year of "getting experience." Meanwhile, you're getting zero data on whether your idea actually works.

"The best data is once you start doing it. You're gonna see how people respond, who gets excited, what the market says, and then it's really around how fast you can take those incoming signals and incorporate them to adapt and move and build towards what makes sense."

Stop preparing. Start building. The market will teach you faster than any classroom ever could.
