I'm Weed Whacking for the People Behind Me

"Women of color have to work four times as hard. And I didn't approach it as if, why do I have to do that? I just thought it has to be done. And I'm doing it. So the person behind me will of course have to work hard, but maybe not as hard because I'm weed whacking for them."

Ambassador Shefali Razdan Duggal told Laurie McGraw the truth about career plateaus that most people won't say out loud. When your hard work stops translating to advancement, when you're working harder than people who are progressing faster, you have a choice.

"There were lots of stops and starts. On paper it might appear incredible if you look at a bio or resume, but there were moments where I did feel as if I was stalled. And the answer for me always was: don't get upset, just work harder."

She calls it "weed whacking"—clearing the path so whoever comes behind you doesn't face terrain quite as rough. That's been her approach from the beginning, working her way from her mother's grocery store job to becoming the first person of color to serve as U.S. Ambassador to the Netherlands.
