Know Your North Star

Know Your North Star

The question isn't whether you can do everything. It's whether you should.

Amy Compton-Phillips, MD, Chief Medical Officer of CVS Health, told Laurie McGraw about the critical skill nobody teaches women in leadership: making deliberate choices instead of saying yes to everything.

"Going through medical school, you make choices. Are you gonna go out with your friends on Friday night or are you gonna study for that final that's on Monday?" Dr. Amy explained. "I've always been pretty clear. I have had to make choices. I could not say yes to everything, stay sane, and get done what I want to accomplish."

But at one point in her career, she was saying yes to too much at work and not taking care of herself effectively. The overwhelm was real. Something had to give.

"Making sure that you know what's important to you, what's your North Star, and then ensuring you're not saying yes to too many things over here that you can't go on your North Star over there—that is a critical life skill."

The myth is that successful women just power through everything. The reality is that successful women make deliberate choices about what gets their yes and what gets their no. They protect their North Star fiercely, even when it means disappointing people or passing on opportunities that look good on paper.

What's your North Star? And what are you saying yes to that's pulling you away from it?
