Emily Shields, Chief Strategy Officer at OSF HealthCare, discovered over 2,000 patients were leaving their service area for psychiatric care—vulnerable people forced away from family and support networks during their darkest moments.
Her solution wasn't to pretend they could do everything. "We had to be honest with ourselves that inpatient behavioral health has not been a core competency," she admits.
So they partnered. A 100-bed behavioral health hospital opens next spring—keeping patients close to home while bringing in expertise they lacked.
