Her answer stops them cold.
Speaking with Laurie McGraw, the CVS Health Chief Medical Officer shared advice that goes against everything ambitious women are taught. "Do really, really well at your current job. Be fantastic, execute. Don't be focused. Don't always have one eye on the horizon. Do the job you were hired to do and people will talk to you."
Dr. Amy has been tapped on the shoulder for nearly every major opportunity in her career—from front-line internist at Kaiser Permanente to Chief Quality Officer, from Providence's Chief Clinical Officer to her current role overseeing clinical strategy for 9,000 CVS Health locations. She never raised her hand and said "choose me, choose me."
Instead, she executed brilliantly. And people noticed.
But here's the part most career advice misses: "The other thing that's really important is to pay it forward. I really try hard to look around and say, wow, this person is interested, is motivated, is doing a great job. What can I give her as the next thing to stretch her and spread her wings?"
This is how women actually advance. Not by constantly positioning for the next role, but by doing exceptional work in the current one while actively creating opportunities for other women. Because somebody tapped you on the shoulder when you weren't looking. Now it's your turn to tap someone else.
Stop scanning the horizon. Start executing where you are. The people who matter are watching.
