The Mission Statement Test Every Leader Should Take

The Mission Statement Test Every Leader Should Take

"If you and your organization cannot recite your mission and your vision and values, then it's too complicated. It's not meaningful and it's simply wallpaper."

Dr. Saria Saccocio just called out every corporate wall decoration masquerading as culture.

As Chief Medical Officer of Essence Healthcare, she doesn't lead with aspirational posters. She leads with one non-negotiable value: integrity. And her definition cuts through the corporate speak: "Integrity is doing what you say you're gonna do. That follow through is critical."

Not "synergy." Not "excellence." Not buzzwords that look good in presentations. Just: Do what you said you'd do.

This clarity cascades. "Each employee knows how they contribute to that mission every day." Not because they attended an onboarding session. Because the mission is simple enough to live, specific enough to measure, and consequential enough to matter.

Saccocio brought community engagement to Essence—not as a marketing initiative but as a reflection of her passion for whole-person care. Values that actually drive decisions. Follow-through that shows in the work.

The test for your leadership: Can every member of your team recite your mission right now? If not, it's time to tear down the wallpaper.
