Neil Redding was already working on the metaverse, before many of us even read the book Snow Crash; by another Neal who coined the term “metaverse” in the mid-nineties. While this futurist, strategist, philosopher polyglot has been at the forefront of spatial computing (AR, VR, MR, XR, etc.) for decades, they remain remarkably optimistic and inspired by these new communication and computing tools.
It was an honor to meet one of our metaverse heroes and this conversation sets a fantastic tone to kick off our interviews from AWE EU, from Lisbon, Portugal, October 20 & 21, 2022. Welcome to the second half of The AR Minute With Nathan C Season 2!
In his work at Redding Futures (https://linktr.ee/neilredding), Neil helps a laundry list of top-tier brands and global teams understand what’s possible in the metaverse—his answer is always more than just technology. From the first 360º video broadcasts from the Sochi Olympics to campaigns for iconic fashion brands — there’s a strong possibility that you’ve already felt Neil’s influence in groundbreaking XR experiences he’s been a part of.
Inspired by everything from architecture and mushroom mycelium, Redding shares his vision for a thriving, abundant future for humanity—applying “billion-year-old principles of symbiosis, cooperation and connectedness.”
Countering the disruption, surveillance, and growth-at-all-costs patterns of the social-internet, Redding’s future vision for the metaverse seeks to give us space to be ourselves and have community in a shared, immersive world.
“If we want that abundance that an era of exponential technology promises, it’s going to have to be connected.”
While not pictured, Auki Labs’ Nils Pihl’s talk “Language, AR and the Shamanic Impulse” was noted a few times in this conversation. Catch this and all AWE EU talks on YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xu4_NThoZ4
